Of course they are , the problem is most corporations only see a payment out not a investment in their company. It's a vicious cycle.
Corporations cut down on corporate wellness programs due to dropping revenues, leaving employees with an even more stressful work environment.
But, according to one health expert, companies might want to think twice before putting employee well-being expenses on the chopping block.
A study by IHRSA found that for every dollar corporations put into a corporate wellness programs they got 3 dollars back. That's a 300% return and that's a great investment!
"In 2005 there was a study that looked at 20 different corporate wellness strategies and studies, and what they found is that one dollar in corporate wellness investment; returns on investment with five dollars and eighty one cents," said Andrea Holwegner, who operates Real Change, a business that helps companies improve employee wellness
She went on to add that costs associated with benefit programs also go up when employee health is not a priority.

How to burn more calories in Calgary
With Calgary's cold weather and challenging snowfalls it's easy to burn huge amounts of extra calories. Go skiing, shoveling snow, snowboarding , shoveling snow, long walks, shoveling snow you get the idea.
Did you know that you can create a caloric deficit by not only eating small
portions of the right types of foods, but also by being more active
throughout the day?
It's true. Take every opportunity to be as active as possible throughout the
day. The more active you are, the more calories you'll burn, and the easier
it'll be to create a caloric deficit for maximum fat loss.
Exercise doesn't have to be limited to the track or the gym. You can greatly
increase the amount of physical activity your body gets (and the total
calories you burn) by making small lifestyle changes to be as active as
possible throughout the day..
Here's a few simple examples:
- Get in the habit of taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
- Keep your sport shoes in the car so you're always prepared to get out and
be active when you have some extra time. You could take a brisk walk or
shoot some baskets after lunch, before returning to work.
- Choose a hike or a bike ride instead of a movie.
- Play with your kids in the backyard rather than dropping them off at the
video arcade.
- Park a extra few blocks from work ( in the spring) and walk the rest of the way.
Any extra bit of activity adds up and over the long-run, makes a big
difference in how much fat you lose. By simply meeting friends for a walk or
bike ride, or a game of tennis or racquetball, instead of "happy hour", for
example, will save you 700 or more calories (i.e. burn 350+ calories and
save 350+ calories on drinks you would have consumed).
By doing this just once a week, you can lose an extra pound of fat a month!
That's 12 pounds of fat a year simply by having fun playing instead of
drinking once a week. Of course, if you made this simple change 2 or 3 times
a week you could enjoy double or triple the fat loss.
Key points to remember:
1. Take advantage of every opportunity to be more active throughout the
day to help create a caloric deficit.
Although today's lesson might seem obvious, it's often overlooked. Most
people only consider calories with the foods they eat and their exercise
routine. But your body is burning calories throughout the day and the more
active you are, the more fat you'll lose.

Great Abs over the Holidays!
Working as a personal trainer/fitness counselor and reading volumes of fitness publications over the years, I’ve noticed that the majority of fitness related questions that I see and hear most frequently revolve around the abdominals. As the centerpiece of the human physique, the aesthetically pleasing abdominals have become the obsession of most people that are concerned about their physical appearance. However, with modern day culture giving us more opportunities to do less physical work and eat more highly processed super-sized meals with increasing convenience, it has become progressively more difficult and frustrating for the majority of people to obtain anything even closely resembling a six-pack.
To make things worse, we are bombarded by so many “magic pills”, ab gadgets, and diets claiming to give you a ripped set of abs that the average consumer can’t make heads or tails over what works and what doesn’t. Just look at all of the conflicting popular diets on the market today. One claims that a low carb diet is the only way to lose weight, another says low fat is the best, and yet another claims that a vegetarian diet is the only way to go. And as for all of the ab gadgets that unscrupulous marketers are trying to say are the secret to a six pack; well, most of them are flat out worthless junk!
The fact is that most people are looking for that quick fix for which they are not going to have to change anything else in their lives; yet remarkably, that quick fix is going to give them six pack abs overnight. Well, the bad news is that no such thing exists on the market today. The good news is that a tight ripped set of abs is definitely attainable to most people (regardless of genetics) if you follow some sound training advice and follow a healthy diet that promotes body fat loss. I have even seen people who have turned some pretty large beer guts into six packs with some hard work and discipline. It just takes time.
The good news is that healthy eating can actually be enjoyable and doesn’t have to feel restrictive. It just takes a little knowledge on choosing the right foods, eating at the right times, and eating the right quantities and proportions. You will actually feel more energized and more productive each and every day by following a balanced diet as I will present.

Oprah Winfrey has encountered a 40-pound hurdle in her quest for world domination.
Oprah Winfrey has encountered a 40-pound hurdle in her quest for world domination.
That’s how much weight she’s gained since 2006, putting her at 200 pounds, she confesses in January’s “O” magazine.
The issue’s cover features Winfrey at her current weight posing with a thinner Winfrey previously photographed for the magazine.
Its headline: “How did I let this happen again?”
The question resonates locally with many people, especially at a time when the lure of seasonal sweets can jeopardize weight-loss plans.
“There are so many people out there who fluctuate with their weight,” said Allan Fine.
“It’s easier to keep it off than take it off ,” says Allan Fine.
That’s why Winfrey should focus on weight maintenance, not just weight loss, said Dr. Jan McBarron of Columbus-based Georgia Bariatrics.
From a health standpoint, McBarron said, “it is better to lose weight and regain it than to never lose it at all” because your body is healthier during the period when you’ve lost weight.
Still, she said Winfrey needs to reevaluate some parts of her approach to health.
Namely, the talk show guru shouldn’t use a thyroid problem as scapegoat for weight gain, McBarron said.
If that problem is being medicated, then weight struggles shouldn’t be an issue, she explained.
Holiday hazards
Winfrey’s headlines come during a season when many people seem resigned to weight gain.
“That is an erroneous conclusion. It really doesn’t make sense,” said Beth Bussey, a registered dietitian at Columbus Regional’s John B. Amos Cancer Center.
“I think a lot of people actually lose a little weight during the holidays,” Bussey said, pointing to the walking that’s required in tasks such as shopping and decorating.
It’s not as if you’re helplessly at the mercy of a calorie-packed season, either.
Whether you’re dining at home or attending a party, there’s always room for some level of control, Bussey said.
At home, indulge in a few holiday-specific treats, but don’t feel as if the calendar alone means you have to pack your kitchen with sweets that are available year-round.
“If I can have it any time of the year, I don’t need it in the holidays,” Bussey said.
At a party, don’t head to the food table immediately — instead, spend some time talking to the other guests.
When you do reach the buffet, fill half your plate with vegetables, and go for additional offerings like salsa and grilled chicken, Bussey said.
Don’t skip out on a party just because you think its menu will compromise your diet, she added.
“People are always more important than food,” Bussey said.
Just use discernment, and don’t be afraid to eat something before the event. Bussey recommends soup or an apple, while personal trainer Layfield suggests drinking a bottle of water before a party.
Winfrey’s future
As her viewers take on the season’s health challenges, Winfrey is planning to get her weight back on track, beginning with a “Best Life Week” series on her talk show in January.
Some experts say that in highlighting her weight gain, she has further aligned herself with the public.
“I think the reason why Oprah is so popular is because she feels so much like a real person,” said Allan Fine
Maybe that alignment has left Oprah with even more pressure to alter her outlook — heeding advice like McBarron’s recommendation that she get healthy and rely on maintenance, not just temporary fixes.
Winfrey’s fans have read the headlines. They’ve looked at the pictures.
Now, it’s time for Winfrey to act.
“Take a deep breath, forgive yourself and just jump back on the wagon. There’s no shortcut,” Fine said.
